Material Passport

The Material Passport is an essential component of Reflow OS. In the distributed manufacturing of a Fab City, each manufactured product (physical object) is given a unique Material Passport associated with a distributed stored record (hash). This record consists of information about the Design Passport it is based on as well as the different materials that make up this physical object and machine paramters that were used to create it.

When the product is at the end of its life cycle, the Material Passport can be used to find out which materials are contained in the product. If the materials are recycled, i.e. used for the production of a new product, this new use of the material is stored on a new distributed data record and the chain (usage history of a material) is extended. Based on this, automatic gratifications and sanctions can be introduced according to criteria of circular economy principles, e.g. monetary incentives.

It should be understood as an application of a Digital Product Passport.
